 Hazel-Atlas Glass Collection on Display

10/14/09

Joan Weiskircher, at left, and Shirley Miller, both of the Alumni Association of West Virginia Northern Community College, prepare Hazel-Atlas glass to be displayed at the Ohio County Public Library in downtown Wheeling, starting on Oct. 20.

The Hazel-Atlas glass collection owned by the Alumni Association of West Virginia Northern Community College will be on display at the Ohio County Library in downtown Wheeling from Oct. 20 through the end of April, 2010.

The large exhibit will be located in the lower level of the library in the former Wheeling Room and will be open to the public during regular library hours beginning with an opening reception at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, according to Joan Weiskircher and Shirley Miller, both of Northern’s Alumni Association.

The display will include all types of glass containers manufactured by that corporation along with a wide variety of everyday dishware, Weiskircher said. Much of the dishware was manufactured in the 1930s and often is considered Depression Glass.

Members of the Alumni Association began collecting this glass because the college's first location was in the former Hazel-Atlas Glass Corp. Building located at 15th and Jacob streets in downtown Wheeling. “The Alumni Association, recognizing that these items are relevant to Wheeling's history, has preserved this collection and wishes to share it with the local community,” Weiskircher said.

In addition to the opening of this exhibit, the Lunch with Books program at noon at the Library on Oct. 20 will feature a presentation by Weiskircher on the history of the Hazel-Atlas corporation. The public is invited to both events.
