Information for Parents

As the parent of a college-age student, you already know that the college experience can be both an exciting and challenging time. There are many things to think about when it comes to your child’s college years – doing well academically, making friends, managing finances, staying safe, and planning for the future.

With all these opportunities and challenges, it is important to also think about your child’s emotional health.

When unaddressed, these problems can have serious consequences – one in ten college students say they have seriously considered suicide during the last year.

If you think a student may be suicidal, please call the West Virginia State 24-Hour Helpline (844)435-7498 (844-Help4WV) anytime, day or night.

There are also other ways that you can help your student. Following the three steps below can help you begin to learn how to support a student going through depression or personal crisis.

The Jed Foundation offers programs and resources that will help you learn more about your child’s emotional health and what you can do to support them if they are struggling.
