Northern Navigator FAQ

WHAT IS AN AUDIT?

  • A NORTHERN NAVIGATOR AUDIT IS A REVIEW OF PAST, CURRENT AND PLANNED COURSEWORK THAT PROVIDES INFORMATION ON COMPLETED AND OUTSTANDING PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE A DEGREE. THE AUDIT IS DIVIDED INTO BLOCK REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS DEGREE AND MAJOR REQUIREMENTS. EACH BLOCK WORKS LIKE A CHECKLIST THAT HAS BOXES THAT ARE AUTOMATICALLY CHECKED WHEN A REQUIREMENT IS MET.

HOW CURRENT IS MY INFORMATION IN NORTHERN NAVIGATOR?

  • THE INFORMATION IN NORTHERN NAVIGATOR REFRESHES EACH NIGHT.  ANY CHANGES MADE TODAY (I.E., GRADE CHANGES OR CLASSES ADDED/DROPPED) WILL BE SEEN IN NORTHERN NAVIGATOR THE NEXT DAY.

ARE MY GRADES VISIBLE IN NORTHERN NAVIGATOR?

  • YES. ONCE GRADES ARE PROCESSED, THEY ARE VIEWABLE IN NORTHERN NAVIGATOR.

CAN I SEE A LIST OF ALL OF THE CLASSES I HAVE TAKEN?

  • YES. ON THE WORKSHEETS TAB, CLICK ON THE CLASS HISTORY LINK FOR A LIST OF COURSES TAKEN AT WVNCC AS WELL AS TRANSFER COURSES.

WHY ARE MY COURSES STILL IN THE IN-PROGRESS SECTION OF THE AUDIT WHEN I ALREADY RECEIVED GRADES?

  • EACH TERM NORTHERN NAVIGATOR WILL RESET THE IN-PROGRESS TERM TO THE UPCOMING TERM. THIS WILL HAPPEN THE DAY AFTER COMPLETION OF GRADE PROCESSING.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT CLASSES I NEED TO TAKE?

  • YOUR AUDIT OUTLINES COURSES NEEDED TO MEET DEGREE AND MAJOR REQUIREMENTS WITHIN EACH SPECIFIC BLOCK. YOU MAY THEN USE THIS INFORMATION TO DISCUSS YOUR PLAN WITH YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR.

I THINK MY AUDIT IS INCORRECT. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

  • PLEASE ASK YOUR ADVISOR FOR ASSISTANCE. THE FIRST STEP IS TO CLARIFY WHAT INFORMATION YOU BELIEVE IS WRONG. THESE ARE THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS AND COURSES OF ACTION:
    • MY MAJOR IS WRONG ON MY AUDIT.
      • IF YOU OFFICIALLY CHANGED YOUR MAJOR, THE NORTHERN NAVIGATOR AUDIT ONLY DISPLAYS YOUR ACTIVE DEGREE AUDIT. IF YOUR CHANGE IS EFFECTIVE FOR A FUTURE TERM, THE CHANGE IS NOT REFLECTED UNTIL THAT TERM.
    • THE REQUIREMENTS FOR MY MAJOR ARE WRONG.
      • LOOK AT THE CATALOG TERM THAT APPEARS ON THE MAJOR REQUIREMENTS BLOCK OF THE AUDIT. ACCORDING TO OUR RECORDS, THIS IS THE CATALOG YOU ARE FOLLOWING TO COMPLETE YOUR MAJOR REQUIREMENTS. IF YOU BELIEVE YOU SHOULD BE USING NEWER REQUIREMENTS, CONTACT YOUR ADVISOR.
    • MY TRANSFER COURSES DO NOT APPEAR IN THE RIGHT PLACE.
      • IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A TRANSFER COURSE THAT SHOULD BE APPLYING IN THE AUDIT, CONTACT YOUR ADVISOR.
    • CLASSES ARE NOT APPLYING IN THE “RIGHT” PLACE.
      • NORTHERN NAVIGATOR USES A ‘BEST FIT’ APPROACH FOR MEETING REQUIREMENTS.  THEREFORE, CLASSES MAY APPLY TO DIFFERENT SECTIONS AS YOU TAKE MORE COURSES.  THE PROCESS IS NOT ALWAYS PERFECT, PARTICULARLY WHEN MULTIPLE POSSIBILITIES EXIST.  IF YOU HAVE A CLASS THAT DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE AREA IN WHICH YOU EXPECT, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR ADVISOR.
    • MY ADVISOR SUBMITTED A PETITION TO SUBSTITUTE A COURSE, BUT IT IS NOT SHOWING ON MY AUDIT.
      • TALK WITH YOUR ADVISOR. STUDENTS AND ADVISORS CAN PETITION STANDARD REQUIREMENTS.
      • IF A PETITION IS APPROVED, THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE WILL ENTER THE CHANGE. IT WILL THEN APPEAR ON THE AUDIT.
IF NONE OF THESE PROBLEMS DESCRIBES YOUR SITUATION OR IF YOU NEED HELP IDENTIFYING WHAT IS WRONG, CONTACT YOUR ADVISOR. IF THE ADVISOR BELIEVES A TECHNICAL ERROR EXISTS ON THE AUDIT, THEY WILL EMAIL THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE

I AM CLEARED FOR GRADUATION, BUT NORTHERN NAVIGATOR SAYS THAT I HAVE NOT COMPLETED ALL MY REQUIREMENTS. DOES THIS MEAN THAT I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GRADUATE?

  • NOT NECESSARILY. THIS CAN BE A TIMING ISSUE SUCH AS POSTING OF GRADES FOR THE CURRENT TERM. IF YOU HAVE FOLLOWED THROUGH ON ANY REQUIREMENTS YOU WERE TO COMPLETE, YOU SHOULD STILL BE ON TRACK FOR GRADUATION. CONTACT YOUR ADVISOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION, IN ORDER TO GRADUATE, YOU MUST COMPLETE AN APPLICATION OF GRADUATION. APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE OR IN PERSON AT THE SERVICE CENTER. PLEASE NOTE THE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS AND DEADLINES.

WHEN SHOULD I LOOK AT MY DEGREE AUDIT?

  • AT LEAST FOUR TIMES A SEMESTER. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS REVIEW YOUR AUDIT:
    • ANY TIME! NORTHERN NAVIGATOR IS ACCESSIBLE 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK FROM MOST NETWORKED COMPUTERS. PLEASE NOTE THAT IT WILL TAKE A FEW SECONDS TO APPLY YOUR COURSEWORK TO THE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS.
    • BEFORE YOU MEET WITH YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR TO DISCUSS REGISTRATION FOR AN UPCOMING SEMESTER.
    • AFTER YOU REGISTER TO ENSURE THE COURSES YOU SELECTED APPLY TO YOUR REQUIREMENTS AS YOU THOUGHT THEY WOULD.
    • AFTER YOUR GRADES FOR EACH SEMESTER ARE POSTED.
    • ANY TIME YOU MAKE A CHANGE TO YOUR SCHEDULE OR MAJOR.

HOW IS MY DEGREE AUDIT DIFFERENT FROM MY TRANSCRIPT?

  • YOUR DEGREE AUDIT IS A TOOL TO PROVIDE YOU WITH ACADEMIC INFORMATION RELATED TO YOUR DEGREE PROGRESS. IT DISPLAYS COURSES REQUIRED AND COMPLETED IN YOUR DEGREE PROGRAM. YOUR TRANSCRIPT IS YOUR OFFICIAL ACADEMIC RECORD AND PROVIDES A CHRONOLOGICAL LIST OF COURSES COMPLETED AND OTHER ACADEMIC INFORMATION.

I EARNED CREDIT BEFORE I CAME TO WVNCC. HOW DOES THIS APPEAR ON MY AUDIT?

  • CLASSES ARE REVIEWED WHEN WE RECEIVE YOUR OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT(S) AND ARE PLACED ON YOUR AUDIT AS TRANSFER WORK. IF YOUR AUDIT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE YOU EXPECTED, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR ADVISOR.

ARE THERE REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION THAT NORTHERN NAVIGATOR DOES NOT CHECK?

  • YES. WHILE NORTHERN NAVIGATOR CHECKS ALMOST EVERYTHING THAT YOU MUST COMPLETE TO QUALIFY FOR GRADUATION, THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS THAT MUST BE COMPLETED AS WELL. YOU SHOULD USE NORTHERN NAVIGATOR IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CATALOG IN ADDITION TO ANY INFORMATION THAT YOUR ADVISOR PROVIDES TO ENSURE YOU REMAIN ON TRACK FOR GRADUATION.

MY ADVISOR PETITIONED TO WAIVE/SUBSTITUTE A COURSE IN MY MAJOR. HOW WILL THAT COURSE APPEAR ON NORTHERN NAVIGATOR?

  • AFTER THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE RECEIVES APPROVAL FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE RECORDS THE WAIVER/SUBSTITUTION. AN ADDITIONAL LINE APPEARS TO EXPLAIN WHY THE EXCEPTION WAS ENTERED.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW A REPEATED COURSE APPEARS ON THE DEGREE AUDIT. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

  • IF YOU SUCCESSFULLY REPEAT A COURSE, ONLY YOUR LAST ATTEMPT COUNTS TOWARD DEGREE REQUIREMENTS. THE EARLIER ATTEMPT(S) ARE PLACED IN A "NON-CREDIT" CATEGORY AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR AUDIT. THE COURSES IN THIS AREA DO NOT COUNT TOWARD YOUR TOTAL HOURS, AND DO NOT FULFILL REQUIREMENTS.

I HAVE SEEN THE ‘@’ SYMBOL IN SEVERAL PLACES ON MY AUDIT. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

  • THIS IS A WILD CARD IN NORTHERN NAVIGATOR. IF THE @ SIGN APPEARS WITH COURSE NUMBERS AFTER IT (I.E., @ 100:299), IT MEANS THAT YOU CAN TAKE ANY SUBJECT AREA WITH THAT LEVEL (A 100 OR ABOVE COURSE FROM ANY SUBJECT AREA). IF IT APPEARS AFTER A SUBJECT PREFIX (I.E., PSYC @), IT MEANS THAT YOU CAN TAKE ANY COURSE WITH THAT SUBJECT PREFIX (ANY COURSE IN PSYCHOLOGY).

WHO CAN SEE MY DEGREE AUDIT?

  • YOU HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR DEGREE AUDIT THROUGH YOUR WVNCC PORTAL NOW ACCOUNT. STAFF ADVISORS, FACULTY ADVISORS, DEANS, AND SELECTED STAFF IN THE REGISTRAR, ADMISSIONS, AND FINANCIAL AID OFFICES HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR DEGREE AUDIT.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH COURSES FINANCIAL AID PAYS FOR?

  • FINANCIAL AID PAYS ONLY FOR THE COURSES YOU NEED IN YOUR MAJOR TO GRADUATE. ONCE A REQUIREMENT IS FULFILLED, YOU CANNOT TAKE ADDITIONAL ELECTIVES OR ADDITIONAL COURSES. FINANCIAL AID ALLOWS YOU TO REPEAT A COURSE ONE TIME. QUESTIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE AT (304) 233-5900, ext. 4444.
