Nursing Selection Process


NURSING PROGRAM: SELECTION PROCESS


Initial Step:


Complete the Following Requirements for College Health Science Application


1. Have a High School Diploma/GED


2. Submit a WVNCC College Admissions Application and be accepted into the college.


3. Submit Transcripts from all colleges attended.


4. Complete assessment placement testing, if required, and meet minimum test scores.


5. After above items, complete Health Science Application.
a) Identify campus and semester starting choice.
b) Submit application to the Campus Service Center with the application fee.
d) Identify CURRENT STATE TESTED NURSING AIDE REGISTRATION on application. 

  • Must be current. 
  • May be from state other than WV. 
  • Must be able to produce certificate, or on line verification with application for program admission.
     

• Or CURRENT ENROLLMENT IN WVNCC COLLEGE COURSE AHS106.
 c) Service Center will forward application to the College Admission Department

 

Admission Department will verify requirements and forward application to the Nursing Secretary for Selection Committee Review.


Requirements for Nursing Selection Committee Review


1. Student will have completed last transitional course (developmental courses required to complete successfully if you do not pass placement test or transfer in college level Math or English by transcript) the semester prior to provisional admission to program.


2. Student will have registration as State Tested Nursing Aide


3. Minimal cumulative GPA 2.5


4. Any student who has completed Anatomy and Physiology courses greater than 3 years prior to application will be required to complete an assessment of student knowledge of the subject by examination once provisional acceptance approved.
This may be scheduled with the Nursing Secretary.

 

There are NO pre-requisite courses other than the transitional courses described above as needed. You are not required to complete any education core courses (Bio, Eng, Soc, etc) prior to provisional admission to nursing program. But, you must complete these education core courses successfully (C or better) prior to or in the semester listed in the nursing program outline that is available in your catalog or on-line.

A Student does not need to complete Health Care Certificate Program prior to application and provisional acceptance to Nursing Program.
 


Second Step:


Having met the above criteria you are eligible to participate in the review process to determine your provisional acceptance into the WVNCC nursing program. Provisional acceptance is contingent upon completion of identified assessments of nursing students listed below.


6. TEAS V Test ATI.
National Boards are responsible for identifying criteria to promote student success in an educational program and to promote the patient and public safety in a clinical setting. Nurse educators and Programs have identified a common basis to evaluate the academic ability of prospective RN students. This is accomplished by WVNCC Nursing Program with a Basic/Profiency Composite Score of 54 on the TEAS V Test by ATI.


7. BACKGROUND CHECK AND URINE DRUG SCREEN
The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) have required hospitals to have a completed Background Check and Urine Drug Screen on health science students working in clinical settings. These requirements vary within states and organizations. The WVNCC Nursing Program will follow these identified criteria to be in compliance with National Accreditation recommendations. This is accomplished by WVNCC Nursing Program with an acceptable status (no felony, no habitual (greater than one in 12 months) misdemeanors, no domestic violence arrests, and no illegal or unauthorized prescription drugs identified with urine testing) completed by www.certifiedbackground.com


To complete the second step for WVNCC Nursing Program Provisional Acceptance for the student must
Complete the:


TEAS V Test ATI with a score of 54 Composite:
• Payment of $50.00 is required in advance of exam in Business Office at your respective Campuses.
• A review guide is available online at the site www.atitesting.com .
• Test may be taken monthly with three times total for program admission.
• Scheduled testing dates will be provided in a student letter by the Nursing Program Secretary.


Complete Certified Background and Urine Drug Screen.
After payment and with a receipt, students must present to the Nursing Secretary a picture ID to obtain a Chain of Custody Form for Urine Drug Screening as indicated at the internet site
Cost for this assessment will be approximately $100.00 and payable with internet contact to http://CertifiedBackgound.com for test completion. Additional costs may apply as necessary for completion depending on prior residence status.

NO Substitutions are permitted:  All students MUST utilize the Certified Background Company.

 

Third Step:


If there are more applicants than spots available, students will be prioritized and reviewed by items below:

  • Application date
  • GPA
  • TEAS V Test Score
  • Students will be notified by US Mail or in person after completion of TEAS V testing of Nursing Program Status (provisional acceptance or declination) and Campus Designation upon completion of assessment requirements and selection committee review.

Upon provisional acceptance into the WVNCC Nursing Program the student will be required to:


8. Submit a non-refundable $75.00 Deposit to maintain acceptable program status to be applied toward registration of nursing courses.


9. Meet by appointment with Program Director for registration for semester 1 of program


10. Attend Nursing Orientation (date to be provided at registration with Program Director)


11. Complete a Health Record (including identified documentation) by Nursing Orientation. Forms will be provided.

All ELEVEN (11) requirements listed above must be complete and accepted as identified or you will be dismissed from the program or provisional acceptance status will be revoked in the Nursing Program.
An acceptable entrance status must be maintained during and to the completion of the West Virginia Northern Community College Nursing Program.
Students who are unsuccesful in any semester are referred to the Standards of Progress Student Reinstatement Proceedure in the Nursing Student Handbook.
