Academic Success Centers (Tutoring)

Housed in each ASC is the campus Tutoring Center. Each center hires tutors who are current students demonstrating above average performance in the courses/content in which they tutor. Students using tutoring services have the opportunity to benefit from learning from these peer tutors who have been through the same courses, mastered the content, and developed strategies that contributed to their success and can be passed along to their peers.

In addition, the Tutoring Center staff also includes tutors who are not current students but who may have been students or who have demonstrated mastery of course content, such as through degree programs in the content area. Several of these tutors have long served students of WVNCC in a tutoring capacity and well understand the challenges and needs of the institution’s students.

If a student needs a tutor in a subject for which a tutor is not currently available, ASC staff will work with faculty and others in identifying and providing a peer tutor.

Finally, Tutoring Center staff can provide guidance and training to students in student success skills. For example, tutors can direct students to electronic and print-based resources for assistance with assignments. Additionally, tutors can provide tips and strategies for improving study skills, time management, managing test anxiety, and note taking.

Students in CIT, English, and Math classes can use the online center for assistance in their courses. In addition, all students in Distance Education courses can participate in discussion boards related to study skills, time management, and paper formatting. Be sure to use the Message function to email papers for English and for assistance that needs to remain private (discussion boards and chats are viewable by any student participating in those forums).

How to use the Online Tutoring Center when logged in:

  • Tools--click on this link on the left side of the screen to access chats through Collaboration, discussion boards, messaging, and other tools
  • Content--click on this link to access the various forms of content on the site. This includes student resources, which includes several helpful links; chats for CIT 117, ENG, and MATH; discussion boards for CIT, ENG, and MATH as well as study skills, time management, and paper formatting.
  • Messaging versus email--use the messaging option to communicate privately with tutors and others. Also, use the messaging tool for attaching papers in Rich Text Format (.rtf). Do not use the email function as this cannot be tracked by staff and may result in your message being missed.
  • Discussion boards & chats--keep in mind that participation in these tools means that other participants, including other student users, can see what you post. Please be respectful of other users by using appropriate, non-offensive language and do not post anything that you would not want anyone else to see. For private tutoring assistance, use the Messaging tool.
