Tutoring Program

Housed by the ASC is the WVNCC Tutoring Program.

TeamworkTutors are current students, alumni and community members, many with degrees, who are committed to providing academic support to WVNCC. Faculty and staff also assist with Tutoring Program services. Individuals employed as tutors demonstrate exceptional achievement in content areas, knowledge of learning theory/skills, a commitment to service and a belief in the value of education. Tutoring is a FREE service provided to all WVNCC students.

The ASC Tutoring Program on the Wheeling campus is a drop-in program - appointments are not necessary - click on the link at the left, month-by-month, for a current tutoring schedule by subject, for each campus. Some tutors may also have limited appointment availability. For more information, call: 304.214.8923.

For more information about the tutoring programs on the Weirton and New Martinsville campuses contact Larry DeRosa (304.723.7514/WRT) or Dennis Bills (304.510.8773/NM).

The WVNCC Tutoring Program is always looking for high-quality tutors to join its ranks. If you, or someone you know, has an interest in tutoring at WVNCC, please contact Tutoring Coordinator, Stephanie Smith, at 304.214.8922 or ssmith@wvncc.edu. Tutoring is a part-time, paid position.

Can't get to an ASC for tutoring? Need a tutor at 10 p.m.?  Brainfuse is the answer!  Brainfuse is an online tutoring service available to all WVNCC students free of charge. Registration is quick and easy. Brainfuse can be accessed through the Student Portal.

Blackboard logoThe Online Tutoring Center

Students in CIT, English, math and distance education classes can use online tutoring services through Blackboard.  Use the "Message Function" for papers and any personal work (discussion boards and chats are public).

To Use the Online Tutoring Center:

  1. Log-in
  2. Tools--click on this link on the left side of the screen to access chats through Collaboration, discussion boards, messaging, and other tools
  3. Content--click on this link to access the various forms of content on the site. This includes student resources, which includes several helpful links; chats for CIT 117, ENG, and MATH; discussion boards for CIT, ENG, and MATH as well as study skills, time management, and paper formatting.
  4. Messaging versus email--use the messaging option to communicate privately with tutors and others. Also, use the messaging tool for attaching papers in Rich Text Format (.rtf). Do not use the email function as this cannot be tracked by staff and may result in your message being missed.
  5. Discussion boards & chats--keep in mind that participation in these tools means that other participants, including other student users, can see what you post. Please be respectful of other users by using appropriate, non-offensive language and do not post anything that you would not want anyone else to see. For private tutoring assistance, use the Messaging tool.
