Placement Testing
Placement Testing
Upon admission, if ACT/SAT scores are not available and/or do not meet minimum requirements, all degree and certificate objective students have the option to take course placement tests in reading, writing, and math to assess their current skills. Also, personal interest students must meet these requirements before registering for any class with an applicable prerequisite.
Students also have the option to waive placement testing. Choosing this option means the student will be required to take a supplemental math class at the same time as a college-level math, and they will be required to successfully pass ENG 097 – College Literacy before they can register for a college-level English. Taking these courses in addition to program requirements may add extra expense or time needed to complete their chosen degree.
WV Northern currently uses ACCUPLACER Next Gen.
ACCUPLACER is a suite of tests that determines your knowledge in math, reading and writing as you prepare to enroll in college-level courses. It is used to identify your strengths and weaknesses in each subject area and to help you improve your skills through interactive online learning tools. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with your academic background, goals and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to place you in the appropriate college courses that meet your skill level. You may need one or more of the following: Reading, Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, & Statistics (Math).
To attempt practice tests, get the FREE Web-Based Study App! (instructions below)

NOTE: The ACCUPLACER Web App is designed to familiarize students with the style and content of test questions found on the ACCUPLACER tests. It does not represent an actual ACCUPLACER test and is intended for practice and review only. Results are not intended to be used to determine course placement. Test results on the ACCUPLACER Web App are not intended to suggest similar performance, nor do they have any correlation to scores from tests administered on the ACCUPLACER platform.
Contact your campus to register for placement testing. Remember, if you are a transfer student or you took the ACT or SAT test, you may not need to take some or all of the parts of the ACCUPLACER Test. Contact your Campus Counselor before registering if you have any questions.
