Library Mission Statement

The Learning Resource Center (Library, LRC) supports the instructional programs of West Virginia Northern Community College by providing the guidance, resources and library services necessary to serve the informational, cultural, learning and developmental needs of its students, faculty, staff and administrators. In addition, the Learning Resource Center extends its resources to meet the informational and educational needs of the people, the businesses, and the organizations of the Upper Ohio Valley. The Learning Resource Center also serves as a vital link for the college community to the local, regional, national, and international community by providing access to information that is not the property of the Learning Resource Center.

Trained library staff is available to assist library users with questions and information needs. The library contains a variety of resources available to students, faculty, and staff including both print and non-print items. Traditional print sources include books, periodicals, newspapers, and pamphlets. Non-print resources include the Internet, electronic databases, DVDs, etc.

Consult the WVNCC Library Catalog on the library web page to locate books and A-V material in the collection. In addition to the general circulating book collection, the Library/Learning Resource Center has several special collections including reference, career corner, college catalogs, study skills, professional development, and A-V.

Reference

The Reference collection is shelved in a separate area of the library and can only be used in the library. The reference section is a good place to find a basic fact or to begin a research project.  The Library also has an online database called Credo Reference in which more than 600 reference books can be accessed online.

Career Corner

The Career Corner is a collection of books  intended for career guidance for students. Information about a specific career such as educational requirements can be found here as well as sources about cover letters, resumes, and interviews..

Study Skills

The study skills section of the library provides information on how to improve skills needed to succeed in college. This includes reading, writing, research, and test taking skills.

Professional Development

A resource area for faculty and staff to use as professional development is located in the Learning Resource Center. Topics of materials include technology, higher education trends, assessment, teaching skills, etc. Print (books, reports, magazines) and online sources are available.

Audio-Visual Material

The Library/Learning Resource Center has a variety of A-V material in different formats including video tapes, DVDs, and computer software. A-V equipment is also located in the A-V section and includes overhead projectors, televisions, DVD players and VCRs. Students must use these materials in the library. Faculty should contact the library to make arrangements for services they need in the classroom.

Vertical File

The vertical file is a collection of miscellaneous pamphlets and articles from newspapers and magazines organized by subject in alphabetical order. These items may be checked out at the circulation desk.

Reserve Materials

Faculty often request that materials (books, articles, videos) be placed on reserve for special class assignments. Reserve material should be requested at the circulation desk. Instructors may indicate if the item can only be used in the library or if the item may be checked out overnight.

Electronic Databases

The library has access to several electronic databases. These databases provide citations to magazine articles. Many of the articles are full-text. Use the Library web page to access these databases.  Off campus, use your Portal log in to gain access.

Internet

The library has computers that provide Internet access to students for research purposes. Besides accessing databases, information can be found on a variety of topics including government, health, entertainment, business, education, and current events.

Photocopying

Photocopy machines are provided for student use at a charge of 10¢ per copy.

Computer Use

Computers and printers are available for student use in the library.

Intercampus Loan Procedures

For those who need materials from another campus, a staff member will make arrangements for the materials to be delivered by intercampus mail, usually within one or two days of the request.
