Twelve West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) radiography students recently attended the 66th annual West Virginia Society of Radiologic Technologists Conference at the Canaan Valley Resort. One WVNCC student, Kylie Toner, won an award in the essay competition.

Toner, of Wellsburg, WV, won Second Place in the essay competition for her research paper titled “Detecting Scoliosis with Imaging.”

“Attending the WVSRT radiography conference was a great learning experience,” commented Toner. “Each day there were numerous informational seminars that I attended on a range of topics related to radiography and its ancillary areas. However, winning Second Place in the essay competition was an honor and I am grateful for that experience.”

Another student, Reva Fristick from Wheeling WV, was asked to present at the conference about her experience in attending the American Society of Radiologic Technologists Student Leadership Development Program national meeting this past June in Florida.

The students were accompanied by Missy Stephens, WVNCC radiography program clinical coordinator and Misty Kahl, WVNCC radiography program director/assistant professor. Kahl commented, “Attending the conference each year allows the faculty and students the opportunity to network with other Radiography Programs and technologists from across the entire state. The students participate in the Essay, Exhibit, and Student Bowl Competitions against eight other schools in West Virginia. They also take a Mock Registry Exam to help prepare them for their certification test that they will take when they graduate from the Radiography Program.  It is educational and beneficial experience for everyone.”

WVNCC's Radiography Program is a 21-month A.A.S degree program that is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Applications are currently being accepted until May 1. Information regarding admissions requirements can be found at www.wvncc.edu.
