Letter From the President

Dear Friends:

As West Virginia Northern Community College prepares to celebrate our 50th anniversary, we recommit ourselves to our mission to “educate and empower our community by providing open access to affordable, high-quality learning opportunities." We are pleased to share with you WVNCC’s 2021-2025 Strategic Plan, “Celebrating Our Past; Preparing for Your Future,” which represents the collective work of the Strategic Planning Committee, Continuous Improvement Council, and many participants from across our three campuses and in the community.

This is an exciting time for America’s community colleges. Our institutions are being recognized nationally as the best value in higher education, as hubs for workforce development, and as engines for economic growth. Thanks to our remarkable faculty, staff, students, alumni, and our many friends and community partners, WVNCC is built on a solid foundation. There is a lot to be done in the coming years and much is expected of community colleges as we support the ever-evolving workforce needs of the communities we serve and work to ensure that our students attain life-changing outcomes

This strategic plan is built on WVNCC’s vision, mission, and the values which we hold dear. Our three strategic goals will ensure that WVNCC is the college of first choice for our students, a key strategic partner in our community, and this region’s premier provider of workforce solutions. We are committed to engaging students and changing lives in an environment that provides for and advances equity and inclusion for all. We recognize and embrace the broad demographic of our students, faculty and staff, and welcome the strength this diversity brings to building institutional capacity and innovation to deliver on WVNCC’s promise, “For all who wish to learn.”

Shortly after I became president, we began discussing the need to work together, in a spirit of inclusivity and transparency, to create a strategic plan that will serve as the roadmap to our future. I asked Dr. Purnima Sharma, Vice President for Planning, Institutional Effectiveness, and Research to lead our planning process, and am incredibly grateful for her leadership in this important effort. The college also retained the services of Mr. Joel Lapin, a national consultant with decades of experience working with colleges nationwide to assist with the overall strategic planning process. True to form, Joel engaged a large group of faculty and staff, more than 60 in total, to complete an environmental scan producing more than 40 trend statements. My deepest gratitude goes to all who led and participated in our collaborative environmental scanning and strategic planning process; your hard work has culminated in a plan that will provide an extraordinary education and transform students’ lives.

Strategic plans give us direction, they keep us focused. This plan is where our future starts - where our dedicated faculty, staff, students, and community partners come together to build on our commitment to excellence, student success, and community vitality; where we bring forth our best ideas; and where we explore opportunities to update and expand our educational and workforce training offerings.

Daniel P. Mosser, Ph.D.
President
